Last fall, I traveled to the East Coast to take NYC Family Photos for Jen, Jeremy, and Felix. Visiting New York City has been high on my bucket list for years. I finally got the opportunity to travel to New York last fall. I have known Jen for over 10 years. Back in the day of early fashion blogging, we met through our blogs. Jen was my style ICON for years.
Jen told me she wanted family photos that felt like a normal day at the park. She dreamed of wearing casual style outfits for their photos and wanted to capture their family members in a place where they spend a lot of their time. Astoria Park in Queens New York holds special meaning to them. I always recommend choosing a place you love as a family when choosing a location for a lifestyle family session.
While I was doing research, I noticed a lot of NYC Family Photos in the area felt very stiff. My goal was to let this sweet family just interact as if I wasn't there. I gave little direction and felt like I just got to observe and document their interactions. I hoped that this session would capture the feeling of New York.
Location Ideas for your NYC Family Session
Prospect Park Brooklyn New York
The morning of the session, it was a little rainy. Although rain isn't ideal, the moody sky made the NYC skyline feel even more dramatic. Because of the rain, I wasn't sure how long we would be able to shoot. Whenever I work with families with small toddlers, I want to prioritize the youngest child's mood. As I always say, the toddler is in charge. Luckily for us, Felix was a champ. As we walked through the park, he was all smiles. We played games, ate a muffin, sat on the park bench taking it all in, and watched the train pass by. The highlight of the entire morning happened when the train passed us. Felix lit up and pointed up at the sky.
Thank you so much for letting me capture your family! NYC Family sessions might be my new type of session to shoot. 😉
