When newly engaged couple, Zach & Joy, wrote to me and expressed their dream of creating springtime ethereal engagement photos in Idaho, I jumped up and down. Joy sent me inspiration including snippets from several of my favorite films: Pride & Prejudice, Tuck Everlasting, and Little Women. Honestly, being trusted with such a strong artistic vision made me feel very honored. I love when couples wish to collaborate together to create a magical experience. When people ask me what a collaborative experience means between a photographer and couple, this is exactly what I mean! They came to me with a vision, artistic images, films, music, and art. Together, we brainstormed how to recreate a similar feeling to their inspiration. I experienced pure joy planning these springtime ethereal engagement photos together!
How To Create Ethereal Engagement Photos
At first, when we were in early stages of planning their engagement photos in Idaho, I knew a few things had to happen. In order to create the soft, romantic, and ethereal aesthetic they were hoping for, I knew for certain I wanted to photograph them in the springtime. In Idaho, the springtime creates a lush, green landscape. To me, ethereal engagement photos mean soft lighting, pastel tones, lush greens, and intimate poses. Shooting in the spring was a no brainer. Then, Joy sent me her wardrobe inspiration which included feminine, pastel dresses and delicate accessories. A bow in her hair was the perfect finishing touch of femininity and sweet romance. Lastly, I knew I wanted to shoot in a shady area without high contrast in the background. I found the perfect meadow for them!
