Documenting the Goldberg multi-generation extended family photos in Sun Valley Idaho at their family cabin was so meaningful. There’s something quietly sacred about a week each summer when three generations gathering in one place. For this family, their private cabin in Sun Valley has been the anchor of those weeks for more than 40 years. As a family, they’ve spent time creating memories on the same hiking trails, the same kitchen table, and the same porch with a view. Photographing them for one evening meant more than making pretty images. Documenting their family was about honoring traditions, catching fleeting interactions, and preserving the feeling of a lifetime of summers together. Choosing The Best Photo Location for Family Photos
We scheduled their extended family photos in Sun Valley for just after dinner before sunset. We started with images at their family cabin where they share so many core memories together. The low, warm light softened faces and warmed the cabin’s wood tones. The cooling evening brought a peaceful, intimate mood perfect for both posed and candid moments. This personal, love filled photo location offered so many backgrounds. We took photos on the porch and cabin façade as well as by the creek just in front of the cabin with aspens.
After capturing some meaningful personal family photos at the cabin, we moved to a stunning meadow with views of Mt. Baldy down the road from their house. I like to capture the “smiling at the camera” “be still and calm” portraits of children and family at the very beginning of the shoot. I know children and kids have a short attention span, so getting the “nice” photos finished first means we can spend the rest of the time running around, capturing moments, playing games, and movement.
