Cinematic Summer Sun Valley Idaho Couples Photoshoot in the Boulder Mountains
Planning Leigh and Jacob’s Sun Valley Idaho Couples Photoshoot was SUCH a blast. On the perfect early summer day in June, we escaped to the Boulder Mountains just outside Sun Valley, Idaho for an engagement session. This sweet couple were visiting from out of town and trusted me to show them some secret spots in the mountains. J & L are getting married at one of my favorite wedding venues this fall: The Roundhouse at the Sun Valley Ski Resort. Adventure photoshoots always make me SO happy. And sharing some of my favorite photo locations that feel otherworldly is such a gift. I love watching people react to the Idaho magic and wilderness.
Leigh and Jacob expressed to me that they were really nervous to get their photos taken. They dreamed of carefree, fun, wild photos. My philosophy as a portrait photographer who specializes in adventure outdoor photoshoots is to make the landscape as much part of the story as the couple in front of my camera. The landscape matters and is a part of the whole story. To overcome their nerves, we met up an hour before their photoshoot for a glass of wine. Before my camera was even out of its bag, we spent time chatting and getting the small talk out of the way. I promised them that every couple feels awkward at first, but we would make their Sun Valley Idaho Couples Photoshoot FUN!
Carefree, Cinematic Couples Photos in the Mountains
Wildflower meadows, sweeping ridgelines, and warm alpine light created a setting that felt intimate and epic. The Boulder Mountains are the perfect photo location for couples who want photos that feel like a painting or a postcard. As the sun dropped below the mountain peaks, the meadow became a golden light warm playground to run around in. Our feet sank into the soft grass as they skipped hand in hand.
This sweet couple exchanged huge belly laughs between playful chases and twirls. The golden light wrapped around all of us, making it feel like we were in a private secret world with no one else around. I live for the spontaneous moments that happen unprompted as couples get more and more comfortable with me. This Sun Valley Idaho Couples Photoshoot felt less like a traditional photoshoot and more like an amazing summer memory spent with good friends. Capturing every candid, joyful second felt like a priviledge and seeing these sweet souls become relaxed, connected, and genuinely themselves was such a blast.
Here’s Why the Boulder Mountains outside Ketchum Idaho are the Perfect Backdrop
- Diverse landscapes and mountain views in a short walk: open meadows, rocky outcrops, dense forests of larch and pine trees, and distant mountain silhouettes.
- Soft, warm golden hour light: the high alpine sun gives long, flattering shadows and that warm happy glow every couple imagines.
- Privacy and authenticity: fewer visitors than lower elevation trailheads, so couples get to relax and connect naturally.
- Seasonal variety: summer brings wildflowers and lush greens whereas early fall adds golden larch and cooler tones.
What to Wear to Your Adventure Couples Photoshoot in the Mountains
Couple Outfit Ideas in the Mountains
- Coordinate your outfits don’t match: Complementary colors and textures photograph best! Think about warm neutrals, dusty blues, sage greens, and soft rust/yellows. Don’t choose BOLD colors or jewel tones.
- Fabric choices: Flowing dresses, linen shirts, and layered pieces that catch the breeze add movement and emotion to images.
- Footwear: Choose shoes you can walk in for your Sun Valley Idaho Couples Photoshoot! Boots or sturdy flats are practical and look natural in mountain settings. If you want to wear shoes with a heel, bring them along in a separate bag to change into once we walk to the photo location.
- Extras: Bring your favorite lived in jacket or blanket for cozy shots! And also a change of outfit if you want a second look.
- Personality: Bring your favorite clothing items that have sentimental value. That includes meaningful accessories too.
