As a Boise family photographer for over 10 years, I know all the best photo locations for family photos in Boise Idaho. Boise is abundant with AMAZING scenery and nature. I love finding new spots and spending time studying maps to find gorgeous locations to take my family clients. Part of the art of being a family photographer is finding locations that will excite kids and feel FUN for families to interact. Personally, I like locations with big boulders, sand, trees, fallen logs, and wildflowers. My goal is to provide kids plenty of space to explore because that will create authentic interactive moments with family members!
- Barber Park in South East Boise
Although I wouldn’t recommend Barber Park in the summer, in the spring and fall, Barber Park is a perfect photo location for family photos. Once float season is over, the park empties out and you’ll find lots of hikers. This spot has a beautiful rocky beach, wooded trails, lots of fallen logs, and tons of variety.

2. Kathryn Albertsons Park in Downtown Boise
Although this centrally located park can get busy on a peak weekend day, Kathryn Albertsons is an amazing spot. The park feels natural, almost as though you’re far out of town rather than smack dab in the middle of it. I love the wild grasses, ponds, wildlife, and big old trees. When I need a “natural” rustic looking location that’s less manicured and accessible, this is my go to for my favorite photo locations for Family Photos in Boise.

3. Foote Park near Lucky Peak
Foote Park near Lucky Peak in Boise Idaho is the perfect spot for family photos. I love shooting towards the canyon on the small beach. It’s stunning at all seasons- even in the late fall/winter when the water levels are low. Also, kids love playing in the sand, throwing rocks, and playing near the water. I always try to pick locations where I imagine kids can run and play. Keeping kids happy during family photos is always my goal!

4. Lucky Peak State Park Discovery Unit
Another amazing spot near Lucky Peak, the Lucky Peak State Park Discovery Unit is located on the water as well. I love this spot because of the tall grasses and dramatic views of the walled cliffs. It’s the perfect spot for a moody day or weird weather. I love the big panoramic views of the landscape and sky!

Of course, I have to include Bogus Basin Road on my list of favorite Photo Locations for Family Photos in Boise. Bogus Basin has endless options. If you have older kids, there are lots of trailheads and fun spots to explore if you are feeling adventurous. Also, there are several easy road pull outs and parking lots where you can capture amazing views of the entire Treasure Valley without walking even 20 steps. The top of Bogus Basin is my favorite spot to shoot in the fall because of the stunning larch trees.

When I want to shoot in the foothills on a busy weekend night, I try to avoid going to the Boise Foothills. Having the space and freedom to run around the foothills without worrying about too many trailblazers or mountain bikers eases my anxiety. For truly amazing family photos, I hope families can get lost in the moment interacting with one another. Eliminating distracting factors is a huge help. The Oregon Trail Reserve is located in SE Boise! I love the foothills in this area as well as the diversity of landscapes.

7. Swan Falls in Kuna Idaho
If you’ve spent ten minutes on my website, you’ve probably seen photos from Swan Falls in Kuna Idaho pop up! It’s no secret that I adore shooting here. The sunsets are out of control at Swan Falls. Plus, you get amazing views of the Owyhee Mountains. This spot is a bit of a drive from Boise at 55 minutes, but it is worth it if you have patient toddlers or older kids.

8. Lake Lowell in Nampa Idaho
9. Celebration Park in Kuna Idaho
Again, kids love rocks. Celebration Park isn’t far from Swan Falls, but offers a stunning lava rock filled landscapes. This spot is a little safer than Swan Falls because there aren’t as many steep cliffs or places for small babes to fall. I love watching kids climb rocks here and run around by the water!

10. Jump Creek Falls in Marsing Idaho

11. Old Penitententiary/Table Rock Trail

12. Camel’s Back Park in North End Boise

13. The Military Reserve in Downtown Boise
When I need a location that’s quick, easy, and guaranteed to be beautiful all 4 seasons- I head to the Military Reserve. The Military Reserve is within city limits, but it is truly a little oasis of wildlife, trails, creeks, and foothills. You have it all in one spot! I photograph families here often with little tiny kids because it’s so convenient and beautiful.

14. Polecat Loop

15. Harrison Hollow in North End Boise
Spring wildflowers!!! Harrison Hollow has an abundance of wild sunflowers called Balsamroot in the spring. I absolutely adore the wildflowers in the spring after a long winter. There is truly nothing better. Harrison Hollow Trail systems has so many great spots with thousands of wildflowers in late May.

16. Eagle Island State Park
When I need a photo location for extended family photos in Boise, I love meeting at Eagle Island State Park. This park is truly massive with lots of wide open space. I never feel like I have to compete for space with other photographers or other families enjoying their day- it’s large enough to explore even with a group of 10+ people.

When I say I shoot at Reid Merril 30+ times a year, I’m not kidding! Reid Merrill is a perfect location for Boise family photos. My favorite season to photograph families here is during the fall. The colors are outstanding here and I love that the tree-cover is thick enough to shoot at all hours of the day. Reid Merril is also located right on the Green Belt, so you have river access!

18. Banks, Idaho

19. Arrowrock Dam

20. Hyde Park
Everyone in Boise knows The North End is the cutest neighborhood in the entire Treasure Valley. Cozy craftsman style homes, old mature trees, narrow streets, and historical landmarks makeup the North End. Also, the North End is made up of adorable coffee shops, small shops, and more.

21. Idaho City Idaho
Granite Peak Trail and campground in Idaho City is one of my favorite adventurous spots for family photos in Boise. I know it’s not exactly Boise… but this spot is under an hour from Boise and so worth it. If you love true mountain vibes, Idaho City is the spot. Pine forests, rivers, and boulders can be found in Idaho City.

22. Bruneanu Sand Dunes in Mountain Home, Idaho
Don’t be mad- but yes! This is another spot near Boise and not exactly in Boise. My clients request Bruneau Sand Dunes constantly though because it’s such a gorgeous spot. The massive sand dunes feel otherworldly and kids absolutely love running around playing in sand. I’m a huge fan of the Bruneau Sand Dunes.
