When Kortney and Brad asked me to document their spring maternity photos in Boise Idaho, I couldn’t contain my joy. You may recognize these two beautiful humans from their Stanley Idaho elopement in the Sawtooths. There is something quietly magical about the Boise foothills in spring. I live for spring photoshoots in Boise. The warm light spilling across rolling green hills, thousands of stunning Idaho wildflowers, and the late Idaho sunsets. Golden hour maternity photos in Boise feel intimate and timeless. Also, I love documenting maternity photos when there is an older sibling or toddler present! The combination of that beautiful maternal glow, vibrant color, and playful toddler giggles create such rich storytelling images that tell a real family story.
Tips for Capturing the Best Maternity Photos in the Spring
- Light: Aim for 7pm or later. The best warm, golden hour (roughly the hour before sunset) creates flattering, warm tones and shadows that enhance skin and fabric textures without harsh contrasts.
- Scenery: The Boise foothills’ gentle slopes and native grasses provide natural lines and depth. In the springtime, the gorgeous Idaho blooms explode in May. You’ll discover penstemon, lupine, balsamroot, and other wildflowers. I adore the vivid pops of color and a sense of seasonality that happen in maternity photos in Boise Idaho.
- Mood: The setting feels relaxed and expansive! This is perfect for candid moments and connecting portraits.
Planning tips
- Timing: Check sunset. In May and June, sunset in Idaho is late. Like 8:30-9pm kind of late. I recommend arriving 45 minutes before sunset to scout and capture pre-golden hour light. Then, I use the last 20–30 minutes for that stunning glow. With a toddler, build in extra buffer time for snacks, bathroom breaks, and stretches. And maybe put your toddler down for a super late nap that day so they can tolerate a later bedtime.
- Locations: There are so many Boise foothill trails and overlooks along Bogus Basin. Between grassy meadows, rocky outcrops, and mountain views, you have endless options. I have lots of recommendations for the best Family Photo Locations in Boise Idaho here.
- Permits and rules: Some Boise foothill areas may have trail rules or seasonal restrictions! I recommend confirming access ahead of time.
Maternity Photoshoot Outfit Ideas
- Colors: I recommend soft neutrals, warm earthy tones, and pastels. All of these options will work beautifully with golden light and wildflowers. Avoid any bold or loud patterns that distract the eye. My personal preference leans towards subtle texture and flowy silhouettes!
- Dresses: A flowy maternity dress adds movement and drama in the breeze. For toddlers, simple coordinated outfits (but not TOO matchy matchy) look best! I recommend sundresses or chambray shirt and light trousers.
- Footwear: Comfortable shoes are a must! Leather sandals, cute Blundstone boots, or sneakers depending on your style will look fantastic.
Making Family Photos FUN with a Toddler
- Keep the photoshoot SHORT & sweet! Toddlers’ patience is limited. I always plan for a twenty to thirty minute window of focused shooting. The rest of the time, we will mix in games, play and/or snack breaks.
- Let them explore: my favorite thing about family photoshoots is capturing authentic moments. My style leans towards candid storytelling moments. I always encourage freedom for toddlers to wander, pick flowers (where allowed), or run a short distance! Many of the sweetest shots are candid.
- Props and prompts: bringing along your toddlers’ favorite toys, bubbles, or a small picnic blanket can encourage interaction.
- Safety first: Stay aware of uneven ground, thorny plants, and any nearby drops.
Phoot ideas for Maternity Photos
- Beautiful silhouette of parents holding hands at sunset with their toddler (& bump!) between them.
- Tender photo of mama cradling her belly while your toddler reaches up to touch “baby”.
- Lots of action shots of the toddler running toward camera with parents in soft focus behind.
- Close up ideas and emotion such as small hands on mom’s bump, wildflowers tucked into a little pocket, and toes in the grass.
- Candid family cuddle on a blanket with lots of golden light filtering through.
My final thoughts! Golden hour maternity photos in Boise Idaho are about more than just capturing pretty photos. I believe whole heartedly in capturing the special season of life you’re in. Experiencing a family in transition, the anticipation of a new baby, and the unguarded joy of a toddler is so sweet. I love maintaining a relaxed, safety minded energy throughout your maternity photoshoot. If we center your maternity photos in Boise in connection and play, you’ll leave with images that feel as warm and alive as the golden hour spring evening light.
